Puck Handling and Mating Rotary System

Customer Container Handling Challenge

A manufacturer required puck handling system to efficiently mate aerosol cans with plastic pucks. The process needed to handle two can sizes and provide precise placement within tight tolerances. The solution had to integrate smoothly into their production line, maintaining high throughput while securely pressing the containers into the pucks for the downstream applications.

Morrison Solution

Morrison designed a rotary-based puck loading and mating drive system capable of handling a single lane of empty pucks and a single lane of aerosol cans. The system featured two infeed timing screw drive units for precise container orientation and a rotary starwheel to streamline the mating process. An overhead rotary can seating device securely pressed into the puck, accommodating the tight tolerances required. The solution was customized with change parts to support two different can sizes, providing flexibility for the manufacturer’s operations.

Construction

The system was constructed with an anodized aluminum structural base frame, providing durability while maintaining a lightweight design. The timing screws were crafted from white UHMW for smooth, precise handling. The electrical system featured AB NEMA 12 AC controls and a common AC drive, providing reliable performance.

Results

Morrison’s tailored solution successfully streamlined the customer’s production process. The rotary-based system achieved a throughput of 160-200 cans per minute, maximizing efficiency while maintaining accuracy. The adaptable design allowed for seamless changeover between can sizes, reducing downtime and increasing overall productivity.
