A Morrison customer required a single line of salad bowls to be oriented before labeling. Given the nature of this application, it also needed to meet high washdown standards.
We designed a timing screw drive unit to accept a backlog of full and sealed, right side up salad bowls from a backlog and orient them through our timing screw (feed screw) system. Morrison was presented with containers in random orientations, and we oriented them to achieve consistency before they reached the inline labeler. We utilized the geometry of the containers to ensure a consistent orientation. By implementing a mechanical system, we provided a more user-friendly machine without relying on complex vision systems, which are often difficult to troubleshoot and maintain.
Morrison delivered consistent orientation, with the flat side of each container facing one direction. Once the containers were properly oriented, we released them downstream to the labeler. There were no pitch requirements as they exited the timing screw system; only a minimal space between containers was needed.
Our system consistently oriented the containers before they reached the labeler and withstood caustic environments and high-pressure conditions, meeting IP66 specifications.
This system was constructed from stainless steel for a high washdown solution. The timing screws are made from food-safe UHMW plastic.
