Metering Over a Keyence Printer for Date Coding

Customer Container Handling Challenge

A nutraceutical supplement manufacturer needed an automated solution to efficiently meter their full and capped OLLY containers in the sizes of 500, 787, and 1,000 mL over a Keyence printer for date coding at a rate of 120 containers per minute, spacing them at 8.25 inches apart from one another.

Morrison Solution

Morrison engineered a system to accept these containers from a backlog, smoothly metering them over a dead plate to simulate the platform above the Keyence printer, which is present at the manufacturer’s facility. In the testing video below, the containers seamlessly travel over the dead plate by means of a timing screw drive unit, providing careful handling of the plastic containers.

Construction

The system was built with anodized aluminum to support durability of the unit. The choice of a single timing screw, constructed from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, allows for gentle handling, preventing increased pressure and damage to the plastic containers throughout the production process.

Results

The automated system successfully metered 500, 787, and 1,000 mL full and capped OLLY containers at 120 containers per minute with precise 8.25-inch spacing over the Keyence printer. The UHMW timing screw offered gentle handling, preventing container damage, while the durable anodized aluminum system provided long-term reliability. This solution’s design improves production efficiency, removing the need for constant manual verification of the date codes. This further increases uptime, leading to improved throughput for the company.
