Alternate Inverting K-Cups

Customer Container Handling Challenge

A K-Cups manufacturer needed a solution to a quite involved container handling challenge. This customer needed a system that can invert every other container 180 degrees, creating a one up one down flow of K-Cups. This solution will also have to be dual laned and must run both stop and stop and in a continuous scenario for a downstream pick and place system.

Morrison Solution

Morrison’s world-class engineers developed an all-in-one system that achieves all the requested applications. A total of four timing screws and a twist are used in this system. The lower screw feeds the K-Cups into the twist assembly inverting the containers 90 degrees, while the upper screw with an external pocket design allows one container to be fully inverted. All while the next container in line is reverted or guided back down to the original orientation. The exact same operation is happening on the adjacent side of the system creating two lanes of K-Cups. The containers traveled out of phase with each other, being released in an alternate inverted pattern.

Construction

The system was constructed from special anodized aluminum, creating an immensely strong design, yet easy to clean and maintain. The timing screws and twist were created from food-safe UHMW plastic, this provided a reliable construction that positively handles the containers while causing no damage to the product.

Results

Morrison’s innovative system effectively addressed the K-Cups manufacturer’s complex container handling needs. By utilizing a combination of four timing screws and a twist assembly, the system successfully inverted every other K-Cup 180 degrees, creating an alternating “one up, one down” flow. This dual-lane system operated both in stop-and-start and continuous scenarios, seamlessly feeding K-Cups to a downstream pick-and-place system. The solution ensured that containers were handled with precision and care, with the design allowing for alternate inversion patterns on each lane. Constructed from anodized aluminum and food-safe UHMW plastic, the system provided durability, easy maintenance, and reliable performance, meeting the high standards required for food industry applications.
