Combining Empty Bottles

Customer Container Handling Challenge

The customer needed a solution to combine two lanes of clear, empty, plastic bottles into a single lane efficiently. The challenge was to manage this merging process while ensuring smooth and continuous operation, adaptable to different container sizes. Empty bottles present a challenge due to their lack of weight from plastic construction, which meant container handling was paramount.

Morrison Solution

Morrison designed a dual combining custom timing screw drive unit to address this challenge. The system accepts two lanes of product from backlog and merges them into a single lane. The screws combine each lane and discharge the containers with a staggered pitch, effectively converting two lanes into one seamless flow.

The system is equipped with the capability to start and stop based on backlog conditions, ensuring efficient handling and preventing bottlenecks. Morrison deluxe adjusters allow for quick setups between different screw and container sizes, and the “No Tools” Quick Change feature enables rapid changeovers, making the system highly adaptable and user-friendly.

Construction

The dual combining custom timing screw drive unit is constructed from black anodized aluminum, ensuring durability and a lightweight design suitable for high-speed operations.

Results

By implementing Morrison’s custom solution, the customer achieved efficient merging of two lanes of 20 oz and 25 oz clear plastic bottles into a single lane at an operating speed of 250 containers per minute (CPM). The system’s ability to start and stop based on backlog conditions, combined with quick and easy changeovers, enhanced overall productivity and operational flexibility.
