Indexing for Sealant Tube Orientation and Transfer

Customer Container Handling Challenge

The customer needed a way to accept empty 30-ounce sealant tubes lying horizontally on a flat-top conveyor and transition them into a vertical chute for further processing. The tubes had to be cingulated and indexed into groups of three to align with a side pusher mechanism. The challenge involved maintaining consistent orientation and spacing without disrupting the flow or causing jams.

Morrison Solution

A dual horizontal screw indexing drive system was engineered to manage the tube orientation and indexing. The system uses two 5-inch OD (outside diameter) UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) timing screws with a 6-inch pitch to cingulate and group tubes efficiently. Designed to mount directly to the customer’s frame, the system transitions tubes from horizontal to vertical using gravity feed and a custom chute. The layout supports right-to-left operation and integrates with existing stop guides and spin stations.

Construction

The system is built with white powder-coated steel for durability in ambient plant conditions. It includes a vertical infeed chute, mounting hardware, and top hold-down guides for smooth tube transfer. Two 90-degree servo reducers drive the screws, powered by customer-supplied AB VPL servo motors. The design allows for shared CAD files and collaborative testing between vendors to streamline integration.

Results

The solution achieved a consistent throughput of 90 containers per minute with reliable indexing and orientation. The 1-second dwell times allowed for smooth acceleration and deceleration without handling issues. The modular design and collaborative engineering process helped reduce installation time and aligned with the customer’s production timeline.
