Prototyping a Twist Block for Unwrapped Gum Containers

Customer Container Handling Challenge

One of the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of confectionery and chewing gum needed to evaluate how their unique six-pack gum containers—unwrapped and horizontally oriented—would behave when transitioned upright through a twist mechanism. Their existing packaging presented new form factors, requiring validation before scaling to production.

Morrison Solution

Morrison developed a Twist Block prototype engineered to take the most challenging unwrapped container from a side-lying position to upright. This initial concept allowed for testing container behavior during twisting, enabling the customer to assess feasibility on their line before investing in full-scale equipment.

Construction

The prototype included a Twist Block design tailored for the gum six-pack, mounted with a quick change system for rapid adaptation. It also incorporated adjustable bypass rails to enhance control through the line. Testing was conducted at Morrison’s facility, without shipment of the prototype, to evaluate handling performance.

Results

The prototype test helped the customer confirm that the novel container geometry could be reliably oriented for downstream processing. This laid the foundation for potential production-scale implementation, backed by documented performance and support from Morrison’s engineering team.
