Turning Square Spices

Customer Container Handling Challenge

A spice product manufacturer faced a significant challenge: efficiently turning 32 oz square containers from a backlog, shifting them from narrow side leading to wide side leading. Post-turning, the containers needed a 5.57” discharge pitch spacing before a labeling application downstream. The solution required efficient handling of various flavors on the same line while maintaining product integrity and meeting industry standards. This was crucial for the product’s integrity and shelf appeal.

Morrison Solution

Morrison’s engineering team devised a dual timing screw drive unit to address the challenge. The solution accepted full and capped spice containers from a backlog, turning them from narrow side leading to wide side leading. It then spaced the 32 oz containers with a 5.57” discharge pitch before the labeling application downstream. This system handled various flavors on the same line at 40 containers per minute, facilitating quick, tool-less changeovers.

Construction

The timing screw drive unit was made of black anodized aluminum, offering a durable and lightweight solution that met specific industry standards.

Results

By implementing Morrison’s custom solution, the customer achieved precise and repeatable turning and metering of their product for labeling. This helped prevent production delays, reduced product wastage, and improved shelf presence. Overall, the solution enhanced efficiency, maintained product quality, and boosted productivity.
