Index and Twist Salt and Pepper

Customer Container Handling Challenge

A leading spice manufacturer faced the unique challenge of moving containers from a wrapping application while standing up to a laying down position on a lug conveyor.

Morrison Solution

Morrison engineers addressed this challenge by developing a custom solution that automatically accepts a single lane of round salt and pepper containers from the wrapper in a standing position. The system then indexes and twists the containers to lay them down on a lug conveyor. This indexing ensures the correct number of containers are set up to enter the lug, and the twist mechanism inverts them to lay down properly before reaching the cartoner. To provide a cost-effective solution, the Morrison equipment is slave-driven off the wrapper.

Construction

The timing screw drive unit was made of black anodized aluminum, offering a durable and lightweight solution capable of running multiple container sizes.

Results

The custom solution improved the transition process, ensuring smooth and accurate handling of containers at 220 CPM. By being slave-driven off the wrapper, the solution reduced operational costs while maintaining high performance. Additionally, the durable construction of the drive unit allows for easy adaptation to multiple container sizes, enhancing the manufacturer’s flexibility in production.
