Inverting Bullets with a Twist Block

Customer Container Handling Challenge 

An ammunition distributor needed a solution to invert two different bullet sizes 180 degrees, with the bullet side facing down, for a downstream application. Our engineers were tasked with making sure that the bullets remained stable after inversion, preventing them from falling over. Given the volatile nature of ammunition, safety was a top priority, especially when handling bullets at high speeds. The solution required a gentle yet effective inversion process to avoid any risk of negligent discharge.

Morrison Solution 

To address this challenge, Morrison’s expert engineers developed a twist block capable of positively handling the ammunition. Given the close size similarity between 7.62 NATO and .308 rounds, both types could be run on the same system, eliminating the need for additional twist blocks or screws. To prevent the bullets from tipping over after being rotated bullet-side down, a timing screw was integrated to feed and discharge the twist block. This innovative design effectively combined the twist block and timing screw into a single modular piece. Additionally, a molded CNC-manufactured plastic section was strategically placed where the rail contacts the bullets at both the infeed and discharge points of the twist block, helping to ensure secure handling and eliminating the risk of accidental discharge.

Construction 

This system was constructed from stainless steel, and CNC manufactured plastic. Providing a light weight and robust construction solution.

Results

Morrison’s ammunition solution successfully automated the 180-degree inversion of bullets, improving the process to be safer, quicker, and more efficient. Designed for easy maintenance and cleaning, the robust system met all customer expectations and adhered to the stringent standards of the ammunition industry.
