Combining Glass Wine Bottles

Customer Container Handling Challenge

Faced with small footprint constraints, an alcohol manufacturer needed a system for combining wine bottles from two lanes into a common lane, quickly and efficiently. Despite the glass nature of the containers, the system had to handle high speeds without causing damage, all while adhering to the strict standards of the alcohol industry.

Morrison Solution

To address this challenge, Morrison designed and built a dual custom timing screw drive unit. This unit efficiently accepted containers from two lanes and merged them into a single lane. The timing screws discharged the containers 180 degrees out of phase with a staggered pitch, ensuring a seamless transition into one lane. This design allowed for positive control over the glass bottles, minimizing breakage even at high speeds of 150 containers per lane per minute, totaling 300 containers per minute.

To enhance adaptability and reduce downtime, Morrison provided three sets of “No Tools” Quick Change screws. These screws allowed for rapid line changeovers, further boosting production efficiency.

Construction

The timing screw drive unit, made of black anodized aluminum, offered a durable, lightweight solution ideal for high-speed operations and met strict alcohol industry standards.

Results

Morrison’s custom solution helped the alcohol manufacturer overcome space constraints, maintaining a high-speed flow of glass wine bottles with minimal breakage. The dual timing screw drive unit improved production efficiency, while “No Tools” Quick Change screws reduced downtime and boosted productivity. This tailored solution exceeded expectations, ensuring smooth, reliable operation within stringent industry requirements.
